This map shows the solar resources available for Canada. There is a small map of Germany included, to compare, because Germany is heavily reliant on solar energy, despite its much lower solar resource potential.
When you look at the area you live in, and compare to the chart on the left, it shows the output for every 1000 watts of solar installed on your property. The charting of solar potential, is based on the latitude.
What Does this Mean for Your Home or Business Solar Potential?
In Fort McMurray, we overproduce solar energy, meaning that for every 1000 Watts of solar installed on your home or business, the sun generates about 1254 to 1285 Kilowatt hours.
Not what you would expect for a city that spends part of the year in long days of darkness! However, the long summer days more than make up for the short days of winter, at this latitude.
What does this mean for You and Your Energy Bill?
In general, the extra energy you make gets sold back to your electric retailer, or “the grid”. This can reduce not just the usage on your bill, but the total bill (which includes the transmission/distribution charge). Then for the darker part of the year, your credits may carry you over. Note that every electric retailer varies, so your re-capture will vary.
You are Eligible for Provincial Rebates
One thing is certain.
At this point in time, Alberta’s provincial government may give you up to a $10,000.00 rebate for residential solar system, and may provide up to a $500,000 rebate for a commercial and non-profits.
Versatile Electric & Solar Ltd., as your installer, applies for the rebate on your behalf. Contact us for more information, here: http://veacltd.com/contact/

But if you have access to some power like your driveway for an RV or a genset for your cabin. Use a $15.00 Wattmeter and measure how much power you are using over a couple days to a week. Without using the AC of course. This information allows us to have the best system design at the best price point for you.
